Torque teno virus among dialysis and renal-transplant patients BJM
Takemoto,Angélica Yukari; Okubo,Patrícia; Saito,Patricia Keiko; Yamakawa,Roger Haruki; Watanabe,Maria Angélica Ehara; Veríssimo da Silva Junior,Waldir; Borelli,Sueli Donizete; Bedendo,João.
Patients who undergo dialysis treatment or a renal transplant have a high risk of blood-borne viral infections, including the Torque teno virus (TTV). This study identified the presence of TTV and its genome groups in blood samples from 118 patients in dialysis and 50 renal-transplant recipients. The research was conducted in a hospital in the city of Maringá, state of Paraná. The viral DNA, obtained from whole blood, was identified by using two nested Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCR). The frequencies of TTV were 17% and 36% in dialysis patients using the methodology proposed by Nishizawa et al. (1997) and Devalle and Niel (2004), respectively, and 10% and 54% among renal-transplant patients. There was no statistically significant association between the...

Transcriptional analyses of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense from infected mice and in vitro culture OAK
Kuboki, Noritaka; Kibe, Michael K; Thekisoe, Oriel M. M.; Sugimoto, Chihiro; Inoue, Noboru.
With the hypothesis that African trypanosomes could have in vivo specific genes for adaptation to host’s environment, the present study was conducted by using suppressive subtractive hybridization (SSH) technique to seek the highly expressed genes especially in host. A total of 328 clones from the in vivo SSH library and that of 160 clones from the in vitro SSH library were analyzed in order to determine their expression levels, but none of the above-mentioned genes showed differential expression. This indicates that no trypanosome genes could be differentially expressed either the in vivo or in vitro propagated trypanosomes. Alternatively, there might be limitation for detecting specifically expressed genes in African trypanosomes using this method,...

Transmitted drug resistance in patients with acute/recent HIV infection in Brazil BJID
Ferreira,Ana Cristina G.; Coelho,Lara E.; Grinsztejn,Eduarda; Jesus,Carlos S. de; Guimarães,Monick L.; Veloso,Valdiléa G.; Grinsztejn,Beatriz; Cardoso,Sandra W..
Abstract Introduction: The widespread use of antiretroviral therapy increased the transmission of antiretroviral resistant HIV strains. Antiretroviral therapy initiation during acute/recent HIV infection limits HIV reservoirs and improves immune response in HIV infected individuals. Transmitted drug resistance may jeopardize the early goals of early antiretroviral treatment among acute/recent HIV infected patients. Methods: Patients with acute/recent HIV infection who underwent resistance test before antiretroviral treatment initiation were included in this analysis. HIV-1 sequences were obtained using an in house protease/reverse transcriptase genotyping assay. Transmitted drug resistance was identified according to the Stanford HIV Database for...

Treatment of a subdural empyema complicated by intracerebral abscess due to Brucella infection BJMBR
Zhang,J.; Chen,Z.; Xie,L.; Zhao,C.; Zhao,H.; Fu,C.; Chen,G.; Hao,Z.; Wang,L.; Li,W..
A 55-year-old male presented with fever, stupor, aphasia, and left hemiparesis. A history of head trauma 3 months before was also reported. Cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed slight contrast enhancement of lesions under the right frontal skull plate and right frontal lobe. Because of deterioration in nutritional status and intracranial hypertension, the patient was prepared for burr hole surgery. A subdural empyema (SDE) recurred after simple drainage. After detection of Brucella species in SDE, craniotomy combined with antibiotic treatment was undertaken. The patient received antibiotic therapy for 6 months (two doses of 2 g ceftriaxone, two doses of 100 mg doxycycline, and 700 mg rifapentine for 6 months) that resulted in complete cure of the...

Urotrema macrotestis and Urotrema scabridum (Digenea: Urotrematidae) parasitizing bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) in Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
MELLO,ÉRICA M. DE; RABELO,ÉLIDA M.L.; SILVA,REINALDO J. DA.
Urotrema scabridum Braun 1900 and Urotrema macrotestis Mané-Garzón and Telias 1965 are reported from the small intestine of Eumops glaucinus (Wagner, 1843). The species were differentiated by the body width, the size and position of acetabulum, the size of testis, the caecal termination, and the distribution of vitellarium. The present study expands the distribution and the hosts of both species in Minas Gerais State and reports U. macrotestis parasitizing bats for the first time.

Vancomycin use in a brazilian teaching hospital: comparison with the Hospital Infection Controlpractices Advisory Committee Guidelines (HICPAC) BJID
Melo,Daniela Oliveira de; Ribeiro,Eliane.
This study describes vancomycin prescribing patterns in an average complexity hospital and compare the guidelines proposed by the Hospital Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC). The study was conducted in a 256-bed secondary-care hospital. Data were collected of all patients given vancomycin from March 2003 to February 2004, using a standardized chart-extraction form designed. Appropriate and inappropriate use was reviewed according to the Hospital Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) guidelines on prudent vancomycin use. Out of 118 prescriptions, 95 (80.5%) were considered appropriate. Out of these 95 orders, 77 (81.1%) were administered for empiric treatment of suspected Gram-positive infections, 17 (17.9%) were...

Vancomycin use in a hospital with high prevalence of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus: comparison with Hospital Infection Control Practices Advisory Committe Guidelines (HICPAC) BJID
Melo,Daniela Oliveira de; Sasaki,Marli; Grinbaum,Renato Satovschi.
This study evaluates vancomycin prescribing patterns in a tertiary-care hospital, with high prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, comparing with the guidelines proposed by the Hospital Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee. The study was conducted in a 930-bed tertiary-care hospital, during 40 days (March 10 to April 30, 2003). Data were collected of all patients given vancomycin, using a standardized chart-extraction form designed. Inappropriate use was subdivided in five categories: empiric therapy without risk factors; continued empiric use for presumed infections in patients whose cultures were negative for beta-lactam-resistant Gram-positive microorganisms; treatment of infections caused by beta-lactam-sensitive...

Viruses infecting bivalve molluscs ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan; Novoa, Beatriz.
Bivalve molluscs are filter feeders and as a consequence they may bioaccumulate in their tissues viruses that infect humans and higher vertebrates. However, there have also been described mortalities of bivalve molluscs associated with viruses belonging to different families. Mass mortalities of adult Portuguese oysters, Crassostrea angulata, among French livestocks (between 1967 and 1973) were associated with irido-like virus infections. Herpesviruses were reported in the eastern oyster, Pacific oyster and European flat oyster and lately in scallops and clams. Disseminated neoplasia, a proliferative cell disorder of the circulatory system of bivalves, although of uncertain aetiology, has been suggested to be caused by retroviral infections. Other viruses...

What about Th1/Th2 in cutaneous leishmaniasis vaccine discovery? BJMBR
Campos-Neto,A..
The T helper cell type 1 (Th1) response is essential to resist leishmaniasis, whereas the Th2 response favors the disease. However, many leishmanial antigens, which stimulate a Th1 immune response during the disease or even after the disease is cured, have been shown to have no protective action. Paradoxically, antigens associated with an early Th2 response have been found to be highly protective if the Th1 response to them is generated before infection. Therefore, finding disease-associated Th2 antigens and inducing a Th1 immune response to them using defined vaccination protocols is an interesting unorthodox alternative approach to the discovery of a leishmania vaccine.
